2013 Toyota Avalon
Toyota has totally redesigned the large Avalon flagship sedan for the latest model year, with a fresh new body. The mechanicals are carried over, but there is a newly-added hybrid model. It's the first Avalon to get a four-cylinder engine, as all previous ones used Toyota's corporate 3.5-liter V6, good for 268 horsepower and 248lb-ft of torque.
The new-generation car continues to get this powerplant, sending motivation to the front wheels exclusively through a six-speed automatic. The transmission has been reprogrammed to be more responsive and efficient and gets a lower differential gear drive. There is also a transmission fluid warmer for prolonging its life.

Three profiles can be selected, including Eco, Normal, and Sport. The Eco reduces A/C system performance and reduces power at lower speeds, while Sport mode gives the ECU a more aggressive program and tightens up the electronic power steering.
EPA fuel economy in the car is now rated at 25mpg combined, 21 mpg in the city, and 31mpg on the highway.

For the true misers, the Hybrid Synergy Drive model offers even greater fuel economy, at a combined 40mpg, 39mpg highway and 40mpg city. It uses a 2.5-liter inline-four running on the Atkinson cycle and mated to a pair of electric motors that can operate as generators as needed. There is also a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack in the car. The combined power output is 200 horsepower. In EV mode and under perfect conditions, the car can be driven for up to one mile and at speeds up to 25mph on electricity alone. There are also Eco and Sport modes.
